Why we built this

Almost every resume builder follows the same pattern. You spend twenty minutes carefully entering your work history, you get to the download button, and you discover the download costs money — or arrives with a watermark across it, or as a low-resolution image that no applicant tracking system can read. The work is done; the paywall arrives at the exact moment it is most effective.

We think that is a bad trade for someone who is between jobs. Applying for work is already expensive in time and morale. So the core loop here — pick a template, fill in your details, download a clean PDF — is free, and stays free. No watermark, no trial timer, no “upgrade to remove branding”.

How we approach resumes

Most resume advice on the internet is generic because most resume tools are generic. We made three specific decisions instead.

Templates are built around roles, not moods

A creative director and a financial analyst do not need the same resume, and naming a template “Elegant” or “Bold” tells you nothing about which one you are. Every template in our catalogue names what it is for, up front, in four parts: the role it targets, its column layout, its visual style, and whether it includes a photo.

So instead of guessing whether “Aurora” suits a project manager, you see Project Manager · Double Column · Corporate · With Photo and you know. We currently publish 31 templates across 14 roles, and each template’s preview is populated with a sample persona from that role — so what you see on the card is what your resume will actually look like, not a generic placeholder.

ATS compatibility is measured, not asserted

“ATS-friendly” is the most over-claimed phrase in this industry. Plenty of templates carry the badge while placing contact details inside a graphic that no parser can read.

We score it instead. Every template carries a published ATS score, and 24 of our 31 templates score 88 or above. The creative and heavily-designed layouts score lower — and we show that number rather than hiding it, because sometimes a lower score is the right trade. A graphic designer submitting to a studio through a human is optimising for something different from an analyst applying through a corporate portal.

The same engine scores your resume, not just the template. It parses your draft the way an ATS would, then reports where the parse degraded and which vocabulary the target role expects but your draft is missing.

Your resume is not our product

A resume is a dense collection of personal data: where you live, where you have worked, how to reach you. We treat it that way.

  • We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers.
  • We set exactly one cookie, and it stores the digit 1 to tell our own server you are signed in. No analytics cookies, no advertising pixels, no third-party trackers.
  • Your resume content goes to an AI provider only when you press an AI button, and only for that request. It is never used to train models.

Who this is for

The tool is built for the person who needs a good resume and does not want to become a typography expert to get one. In practice that has meant:

  • First-time job seekers who have never written a resume and do not know what a “summary” is supposed to contain.
  • People changing industries, who need the same history reframed for a different audience — and can switch template and role without re-entering anything.
  • Anyone applying through a corporate portal, where an unreadable PDF means rejection before a human ever opens it.
  • People applying in volume, who need to duplicate a resume, adjust it for one posting, and export again in under a minute.

What we are not

We would rather be clear about the limits than oversell. We are a drafting and formatting tool. We are not a recruitment agency, we do not review your resume by hand, and we cannot tell you whether a specific employer will call you back.

The AI features draft and rewrite text — they do not know your career. Everything they produce needs your review before it goes out, because a confident sentence about a job you did not do is worse than a plain sentence about one you did.

Is ResumeHQ really free?
Yes. You can build a resume, customise it, and download it as a PDF without paying and without creating a trial that expires. We do not add watermarks to downloads and we do not lock export behind a subscription.
Do I need an account to use the builder?
You need a free account to save a resume and come back to it later, because your work has to be stored somewhere associated with you. You can browse every template and see exactly what you are getting before signing up.
What does ATS-friendly actually mean?
An Applicant Tracking System is software that parses your resume into structured fields before a human sees it. A resume is ATS-friendly when that parsing succeeds: standard section headings, real text instead of text baked into images, a single logical reading order, and no critical information hidden in headers, footers, or decorative graphics.
How is the ATS score calculated?
We parse your resume the way an applicant tracking system would, then score it across structural and content dimensions — whether sections are recognisable, whether experience entries carry dates and measurable outcomes, and how well your wording overlaps with the vocabulary of the role you are targeting. The score is guidance for improving a draft, not a prediction of whether you will be hired.
Will my resume data be used to train AI models?
No. Resume content is sent to a third-party AI provider only when you explicitly use an AI writing feature, and only for the duration of that request. We do not sell your data and we do not use your resumes to train models. This is covered in detail in our Privacy Policy.
Can I use ResumeHQ if I have no design skills?
That is the point of it. Every template already has its spacing, typography, and hierarchy resolved. You fill in your details and the layout stays consistent, so you cannot accidentally produce something that reads as unprofessional.
